Yang 阳
Yang names everything warming, activating, expanding and outward-moving — the half of the pair that drives change and defends.
Pinyin: Yang · Five Element: Fire · updated
Yang names the qualities of warming, activating, expanding and moving outward. It is the functional half of the pair — morning, fire, sun, activity, the processes that push circulation and transformation forward.
Yang depends on Yin for its fuel. When Yin is exhausted, Yang has nothing to burn and becomes restlessness rather than strength: agitation, insomnia, a racing pulse. This is why excessive warming tonics can make a person worse when the real problem is Yin deficiency.
Supporting Yang means protecting warmth and activity: regular movement, warm food, daylight, and warmth kept over the lower back and feet. Done in moderation and in the right direction, it is the strongest lever for people who feel cold all year.
Signs that suggest this pattern
No single sign establishes a pattern — Chinese medicine reads combinations, not isolated symptoms. If several of these are familiar and have been for a while, it is worth running the Yin-Yang Balance Test to see what the combination scores.
- How readily you feel cold
- How easily you start and keep moving
- Your appetite and how actively digestion works
- Whether you feel alert and engaged through the day

Patterns that often appear alongside this one
Yang Deficiency
Yang deficiency is insufficient warming function — you feel cold, digest slowly, and move with less spark than the seasons call for.
Kidney
The Kidney stores Jing — the constitutional essence that governs growth, ageing and reproduction — and governs water metabolism.
Cold-Dampness
Cold-dampness is dampness that has been chilled — heaviness plus cold, which is what a weak digestion produces when cold food meets it.
Qi Deficiency
Qi deficiency means your defensive and transformative Qi runs low, so ordinary effort costs more than it should and colds come easily.
Qi
Qi is the umbrella concept in Chinese medicine — the body's capacity to move, warm, transform and defend, rather than a single substance.
Triple Burner
The Triple Burner is a functional system, not a paired organ — it governs the body's waterways and the exchange between its three regions.
